Ruth Elaine Wittman

Ruth E. Wittman, age 90, of Allentown, died on Monday March 15th at Cedarbrook.

 

Born in Allentown, she was a daughter of the late Erwin R. and Mava S. (Wagner) Braker.

 

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert H. Wittman, who died in 1987, and, later by longtime friend and companion, Robert Toth of Hereford Township, Berks County.

 

Ruth spent her working career as a retail and office clerk. As a senior high school student at Allentown High School, she helped set up the new Sears store before it opened at Seventh and Allen streets, then went on to work in the bookkeeping department of Davies, Strauss and Stauffer Co. after graduation in 1947. Later she was a sales clerk at Suzanne’s dress shop and at Hedon Hosiery in Allentown; worked in inventory control for the Thrift Drug Co. distribution center in Allentown; later in the data processing department at Harold Stephens Co. of Allentown. She retired from the product assembly department of B. Braun of the Lehigh Valley.

 

Among the organizations that benefited from her life of volunteerism were the United Church Women of Dubbs at the former Dubbs Memorial United Church of Christ of Allentown, where she was a member from her teens until the church closed in 2015; the Ladies Auxiliary of the Gold Star Veterans Memorial Post 2124 of Allentown; the Veterans Administration medical clinic in Allentown; and the Lehigh County Republican Women.

 

She enjoyed gardening, cooking and the closeness of her family.

 

Ruth is survived by a son, Robert H. Wittman, Jr., and his husband, Frank A. Whelan, Jr. of Allentown; niece Susan Case of Fogelsville and nephews Douglas Yost of Tafton, Pike County, and John Christopher Braker of Milwaukee, WI. Her sister, Dorothy Yost, passed away in 2010, and her brother, Erwin Braker Jr., passed away in 2017.

 

Arrangements are being handled by Nicos Elias Funeral Home of Allentown. There are no public services or calling hours, and interment at St. Peter’s (Snyder’s Church) in Seemsville, East Allen Township, is private.
