Obituary – Spyro J. Gellos of Allentown, PA

Spyro, born 2/22/1930, lived in Allentown his whole life. A graduate of William Allen High School, he received a B.A. in English from Muhlenberg College, and a J.D. from Georgetown University. Spyro also served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Formosa (now Taiwan) during the Korean War. He then returned to Allentown and served the community as an attorney for more than four decades. He truly loved what he did and did what he loved.

Spyro was a modern-day Renaissance Man. He was fluent in English, Greek, Latin, and French. He loved history. He painted. He adored music, especially playing and listening to violin. And he was an avid collector of antiques.

Spyro was a devout Greek Orthodox Christian proud of his heritage and was an active member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Bethlehem. He formed the Gellos Family Trust to help support the church. He established a scholarship program with the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) chapter in Allentown, where he was a long time member and past president. And he supported all his alma maters generously.

Spyro’s parents were John and Helen Gellos, who were both from Tripi outside Sparta, Greece. His beloved brother George Gellos, also of Allentown, passed away in 2015. Spyro's family wishes to thank the staff of the Phoebe Home of Allentown and the staff of Nest In Place for making Spyro's final days pleasant and compassionate.

Spyro is survived by his cousin Theodore G. Phillips, M.D., his wife Gail, and their children George, Peter, Lena and husband Randall; his relatives Demetra Kritikos, her husband Pano, and their children, of Greece; and his cousin Angelos Phillips, formerly of Allentown and now of Greece. He also is survived by his beloved cat Frosty.

Services: viewing Friday, June 28th starting at 10:00 a.m. at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1607 W. Union Blvd., Bethlehem. Funeral service at 11:00 with interment following at Cedar Hill Memorial Park, Allentown. Arrangements by Nicos C. Elias Funeral Home, Allentown.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to the St. Nicholas Living Memorial Scholarship Endowment: www.stnicholas.org/livingmemorial. May his memory be eternal.
